Lake Nyos |

It has been over twenty years since Lake Nyos released a lethal cloud of carbon dioxide that swept through the lower villages of Nyos-Acha, Subum and Cha asphyxiating approximately 1700 people. Being a Peace Corp Volunteer in Fundong, I had the opportunity to visit Lake Nyos on August 24, 1986. Furthermore, I continued to observe and record events at Lake Nyos on a monthly basis until August 1987. Over a three month period, I documented the location of compounds (houses), noting the number of survivors and fatalities on a USGS topographic map. This compiled data revealed the path and height of the CO2 cloud in relation to the topography. |

There has been a tremendous amount of debate within the scientific community regarding the volume of water that was displaced by the expulsion of the CO2. The water level of Lake Nyos dropped 15 - 20 cm relative to the spillway. This is documented by several photographs, observations and an interview with Ephriam Che. Ephriam walked by the spillway the morning of August 22, 1986 on the way to Nyos-Acha. | ||||||||||

The majority of the photographs and data have not been made available to the scientific community. If you are interested in acquiring a higher resolution image or incorporating the data or interviews into your scientific research, please contact me. Thank you, |
