Lake Nyos 1/5/87

January 5, 1987
No disturbance in the water (bubbling) as the red stream (iron-hydroxide precipitate) emerged from the lower waters of Lake Nyos. The red stream was not visible below the lake surface, even though the water clarity was excellent.

The stream was approximately 20 cm wide when it appeared at the surface and quickly acquired a large head, approximately 3 - 4 meters in diameter.

Several older streams were visible
on the surface of the lake, running
north to south, the prevailing wind
direction.

Locals mention that the red streams have been occurring on the lake surface over the last several days.
Birds were present on the water.
