There was a small explosion at Lake Njupi in 1981. It was reported that water and spray shot up a considerable distance into the air. There were no fatalities. This event in 1981 was very similar to the Lake Nyos eruption (August 21, 1986) but on a much smaller scale. Perhaps this is why Lake Njupi is known as a bad lake according to local folklore.

Was quite surprised to see that Lake Njupi changed colors, from blue to a reddish brown. Plant life was undisturbed, insects and birds were abundant on the lake surface. The surface temperature of Lake Njupi was 23 degrees Celcius. The only anomaly was the reddish brown color of the water.

The lower gas saturated waters of Lake Nyos are probably being released periodically into Lake Njupi through groundwater or springs.
